Located in Frankfort, an hour east of Louisville( Kentucky's capital), the Buffalo Trace Distillery is said to have been built near a ford crossing the Kentucky River, which extended a track once used by many herds of bison. Originally known as Old Fire Copper (O.F.C.) and renamed George T. Stagg in 1900, it was led by a certain Colonel Blanton between 1921 and 1953.
During Prohibition, it was one of four distilleries in the United States authorized to produce whiskey for medicinal purposes. Renamed Ancient Age in 1969, it has been named Buffalo Trace since 1999 and is displayed in large on a water tower worthy of the best westerns.
A pioneer in more ways than one, she was the first in 1984 to release a single barrel bourbon, Blanton's. It is also the only Kentucky distillery to produce five different whiskey styles: two from rye, one from barley, one from wheat and one from 100% rye. Thus, it has the widest range and the largest stock of old American whiskeys.
A specialist in maturation, the distillery has more than 1500 experimental barrels that allow it to study different types of aging. Finally Buffalo Trace, which is no longer an innovation, also produces the only vodka from organic corn, called Rain Vodka.
It is therefore quite logical that it was voted the best distillery of 2005 by both Whisky Magazine and the American magazine Malt Advocate.
