Châterau du Breuil

Nestled in the middle of the green heart of Normandy, is the Château du Breuil.
This castle with pink tiles was built in the 16th and 17th centuries and was owned by the great noble families who stayed there such as the Bouquetots, the Montgommery, the young Tancrède de Rohan, the Bence.
The Château du Breuil company was founded in 1954 by Philippe Bizouard, whose family has always distilled Calvados. It is now managed by Didier Bédu.

The mild and humid climate, the chalky soil of the Pays d'Auge allow the Château du Breuil to have the ideal conditions to successfully exploit the 22,000 apple trees that it has in the municipalities of Breuil en Auge and St Philbert des Champs, respectively 1 km and 4 km from the castle.
The Château du Breuil company produces its own cider, the result of 100% natural fermentation of apple juice. Know-how and experience are the strengths of Château du Breuil, which prefers to give priority to quality rather than quantity. And when the cider has reached its maximum, the distillation can begin ...
The distillation campaign takes place at the start of winter, until the following summer. To obtain a liter of 100% alcoholic Calvados, around 27 kg of apples are needed, or a little more than 20 liters of 5% alcohol cider.
Unlike "AOC" Calvados, "AOC Pays d´Auge" Calvados comes exclusively from the double distillation of cider produced from apples from the Pays d´Auge region.

The Calvados obtained is thus more refined, thanks to the superior quality of the apples produced by the soil specific to this region, and also by the elimination, during the two distillations, of the less noble parts of the alcohol. At Château du Breuil, exclusively Calvados "AOC Pays d’ Auge "is distilled.

In the cellars, Calvados ages only in oak barrels. Château du Breuil pays particular attention to the choice of the barrel, because its nature, its dimensions and its age play a considerable role in the quality of aging. From the subtle osmosis between wood, air and alcohol will depend the finesse and the bouquet of Calvados. Each Calvados is different, each Cellar Master has his secret which he keeps jealously. The delicate and refined taste of our Calvados depends less on their age than on the quality of their blends, created by the Cellar Master of Château du Breuil.
Listed as a historic monument, the Château has been completely restored by the current owners, who have been distilling spirits for three generations.
