Moric Project - Villa Tolnay

Hidden Treasures NR3 - Balaton
Riesling - Fürmint
2018

Hongrie - Badacsony

The "Hidden Treasures" project is a collaboration between Roland Velich of the Austrian Moric Estate and Villa Tolnay, a Hungarian estate on the northern shores of Lake Balaton.

Villa Tolnay is located on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, at the foot of the Csobanc mountain, in the middle of a nature reserve. The winery was founded in 2004 by the Swiss Philipp Oser and has been growing ever since. Millions of years old volcanic soils and sediments from the Pannonian Sea give the wines a unique expression. Today, the estate has 20 hectares, most of which are located directly around the winery building. The top priority is to bring the particular conditions of the place (soil, microclimate) and the grapes in the best possible way into the bottle. Pure manual work, from spring pruning to harvesting, is an essential principle. The aim is to produce wines with character and ageing potential. There is a long and very interesting tradition of Riesling in Lake Balaton. Especially on the northwestern shore of the lake, in the picturesque volcanic landscape, very expressive wines can be produced. Furmint could be the Pannonian equivalent of Riesling: high acidity, fine flowers and fruit aromas, great aging potential. Therefore, it makes a lot of sense to combine these two grape varieties into one wine, both aromatically and culturally.
