Churchill's
Quinta da Gricha
Porto DOC
Portugal - Douro
In 1999, the purchase of Quinta da Gricha, ranked “A” in the Port Wine Institute hierarchy, pushed Churchill’s into Douro wine production, establishing the house as a major player in the market. This 50 hectare plot is located on the south bank of the Douro, between the towns of Pinhao and Tua, in the prestigious sub-region of Cima Corgo. The vineyards are planted between 150 and 250 meters above sea level and overlook the sumptuous Douro.
During the first six months, the young vintage port spent the winter months at Quinta da Gricha, in the Douro vineyard, and then was taken down to one of the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, where it was stored in a stainless steel tank until bottling.

The Porto Churchill's house is the most recent since it was only established in 1981. Johnny Graham named his house after his wife's maiden name, Caroline Churchill. Before embarking on this adventure, Johnny Graham studied at Taylor's and Cockburn. Johnny Graham is therefore not a newcomer to the world of port, especially since he has benefited from the wise advice of his two brothers, William Graham and Anthony Graham.
The Churchill’s house only sells ports whose grapes come from vines classified "A" by the Port Wines Institute, only Grands Crus of some sort! Exceptional terroirs that she owns.
Starting with the Agua Alta, Manuela and Fojo estates, which belonged to the late Jorge Borges, of the Sousa family.
More recently, the Churchill's company acquired the Quinta da Gricha (100 hectares on the south bank of the Douro), Quinta da Rio (20 hectares in the Rio Torto valley) vineyards, and also operates the Quinta da Perdiz (30 hectares).
In addition to this enhancement of quintas in what they may have specific in terms of terroir, the Churchilll house is also attached to the notion of vintage, essentially making wines from old vines from its estates.
Churchill's only retains Ports with the potential of “vintage”, that is to say Ports that will be vintage, with an exceptionally long aging potential (40 to 50 years), and LBV (Late Bottled Vintage). traditional, unfiltered, which are gently handled when serving to preserve the deposit at the bottom of the bottle.
It is this intransigence in the pursuit of quality that has already enabled the House of Churchill’s to obtain excellent comments from Anglo-Saxon scholars.
A very dynamic young port with a lot of natural acidity, but also a balance and a pedigree denoting its origins as a grade "A" vineyard.
Churchill's Estates Quinta da Gricha
Concentrated, with a mixture of anise and berry flavours, dried berries and cherries. In the final, white pepper, sage and tarragon.
Produced in a style and quality similar to vintage port, LBV port offers powerful sensations, a rich nose, a structured palate and a long finish.
Churchill's Estates dry red wine has excellent structure and acidity on the palate, showing purity of fruit combined with elegance and a long, complex finish.
