Château des Bachelards
Comtesse de Vazeilles 2018
Moulin-à-Vent AOP
France - Beaujolais
The Moulin-à-Vent is a blend of plots of land which have in common that they are on the very old mother rock of black granite, feldspars and schists of a very fine grain which confer a lot of subtlety and depth to the wine.
Grape variety:
100% Gamay.
Gravity harvesting, 10% whole grapes, vinification in rough concrete vats, 28-day maceration, 12-month ageing in stainless steel vats and 500-litre demi-muids in order to preserve both freshness and substance, indigenous yeasts. No carbonic or semi-carbonic maceration, nor thermovinification.
Tasting notes:
This wine has an almost black violet colour. The nose is very elegant with a beautiful palette of black fruits, black pepper and fine and varied spices. On the palate, this wine is both deep and very elegant. It offers complexity, density and a good length, relatively firm, with a splendid mid-palate and velvety blackberry notes of great purity. The finish is still restrained by a silky tannic structure, but without aggressiveness. This wine has great potential with a surprising bounce on the finish. The whole is airy and without the slightest rusticity. Velvet...

The other vintages of:
The Château des Bachelards vineyard was created by the Benedictine monks of Cluny around the year 1100. It is the southernmost monastic vineyard in Burgundy. It extends over 12 hectares, including 6 hectares in Fleurie, all in one piece around the château, surrounded by a walled area cultivated like a garden, to which are added parcels in Moulin-à-vent and Saint-Amour.
Alexandra de Vazeilles has been the happy owner since 2014. She has no family roots in Beaujolais and it is for her a choice of terroir as she ranks the granitic soils of Fleurie among the greatest terroirs in France.
The grape variety is autochthonous, it is a rare variety. It is a plural gamay because there are many varieties and ampelographic research is underway at the château.
The wines are doubly certified organic FR-BIO-15 and biodynamic Demeter. Château des Bachelards is the only one in the appellation and will remain the pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent and Saint-Amour. The soils have been free of chemicals for over 12 years and this changes the style of the wines. Standardised by yeast-raised wines on weeded soils, few professionals recognise the appellations of the Château des Bachelards wines blindly. They are characterised by the combination of the elegance of Burgundy and the greed of the Rhone Valley.
The soils are alive and so are the wines.
The estate does not practice carbonic or semi-carbonic maceration or thermovinification. It does not use any selected yeast.
The wines have their own identity and resemble only themselves, they are of the place.
