Domaine Marcel Deiss
Mambourg Grand cru 2017
Alsace Grand Cru Mambourg AOC
France - Alsace
Dominating Sigolsheim, the Mambourg is the earliest hillside in the vineyard. Stretching over nearly 1.3 km and covering 61.85 ha, facing south on the hillside, the Mambourg dominates Sigolsheim. As early as 783, history reveals that the wines of Sigoltesberg (the present-day Mambourg) were renowned for their elegance, harmony and capacity for long ageing. Numerous convents and lords were owners and gave it its letters of nobility.
Its particular geology, derived from the Oligocene limestone of the Quaternary period, gives Mambourg a very rare characteristic, an ever-present tannic power and a suave roundness of form. The wines, always perfectly dry, are of course sometimes overly powerful and extremely complex.

Domaine Marcel Deiss is one of the great wine estates of Alsace.
Founded by the Deiss family, present in Bergheim since 1744 to produce wine there, the Domaine Marcel Deiss was born at the end of the Second World War. The creation of the vineyard is the work of Marcel Deiss who, after a military career which began at the age of 18, returns to his native Alsace to reconnect with his first loves. Accompanied by his son André, Marcel Deiss set up a vast wine estate, domiciled in Bergheim on the aptly named Route du Vin and which extends over the neighboring municipalities. Since 1997, all of the parcels of Domaine Marcel Deiss have been cultivated biodynamically.
Mathieu Deiss succeeded his father Jean-Michel at the head of this venerable domain of Bergheim.
Complantation is always the common thread, even in the Grands Crus. Even if the process is ancestral in the region, it remains very little followed and strongly divides the winegrowers. The Deiss take this step further and deliver compelling, complex wines with wonderful flavor intensity and incredible balance. Mathieu also created the Vignoble du Rêveur from the maternal vines, located in Bennwihr (he produces particularly high-quality orange wines). The wines are out of the ordinary for the region, which is a bit confusing for the consumer, but the result is magnificent. A few years of hindsight allow us to analyze the precision of the definitions of terroir and the ability of these wines to manage their own balance. To discover at the estate: the unique experience of geo-sensory tasting, which allows you to understand the relationship between the characteristics of the wine and the terroir from which it was born.
Three families of wines are defined:
- fruit wines; gourmet wines at will, faithful to their grape variety, always remarkably well balanced.
- time wines; affected by noble rot and requiring patience to flourish and deliver all their greatness.
- local wines; the most fascinating of the Marcel Deiss estate by their constitution and their aromatic complexity, deep, salivating wines, which only ask to be expressed, as personified by the terroir ...
Tasting the range of the estate is a fascinating journey, which offers a renewed interpretation of Alsatian terroirs.

Red wine, powerful, with polished tannins. The material is ample, muscular and deeply tactile, like this clay soil. A beautiful red wine to keep.
