Introducing the peated version of Waterford Irish Whiskey!

The first peated Irish whiskies, for generations, were bottled by the Waterford Distillery on Grattan Quay. Until its reintroduction by Waterford, Irish peat had not been used in whiskey production since the early 20th century, so all knowledge of the use of Irish peat had disappeared from the collective memory.
Waterford owner and founder Mark Reynier, who resurrected the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay, is no stranger to the peated whisky production method and created the now very famous Port Charlotte and Octomore peated Scotch whiskies.

In its pioneering quest to discover the most natural flavors in whisky, Waterford dried barley grown on the Ballybannon farm in Carlow, using peat from Ballyteige in County Kildare. The crop from each farm was peated to 47 ppm (phenols expressed in parts per million).
Although the peat levels are similar to those of famous Islay whiskies such as Port Charlotte and Ardbeg and higher than Bowmore or Lagavulin, the extraordinary result is distinctly different, with the intensity of Irish barley shining through the encompassing envelope of refined peatiness.

This Waterford Peated Ballybannon offers curious tasters and peat fanatics (affectionately known as Peat Freaks) a whole new experience of comparison and contrast. Or perhaps it's just an old memory from a bygone era, reawakened?
And as for whether the terroir outweighs the peat... It's up to you to find out!

Mark Reynier, the former co-owner of Bruichladdich founded the Waterford distillery in 2015.
Keen to emphasise the notion of terroir, he works closely with around 100 Irish farmers.

In 2016, he produced the first organic Irish malt distillate and more recently, following the example of the greatest winemakers, he decided to distil a whisky from biodynamically grown barley.

Using 100% Irish barley, recognised as the highest quality in the world, the Single Farm Origin range is a series of limited edition natural whiskies of the highest quality that reveal the Irish terroir farm by farm, place by place.

They are an expression of precision and rarity, revealing the aromas and flavours of barley grown on small Irish farms and varying with each harvest.

The ultimate aim is for the combination of these different single farms to create the most unique, complex and profound single malt whisky in the world. But within this range, they are the first step in revealing natural whiskies where barley and the influence of terroir come first.

Each bottle of Waterford whisky has the breakthrough innovation of a teireoir code. This code, once registered on the distillery's website (waterfordwhisky.com), opens up a series of unprecedented and interactive contents related to the single malt.

With an extensive photographic library and an unrivalled online tracking system, you can find out about the farm, the harvest, the farmer, but also details of the distillation process and a full view of the casks used for each Single Farm.

Teireoir: Proud of its origins, Waterford claims the Irish character of the terroirs it promotes, writing Éire (Ireland in Gaelic) in the term terroir.
