There is often a young generation within the major appellations that benefits from the experience and know-how of their predecessors and seeks to push the boundaries, to constantly improve wines that already seem at the top.
This is the story of the Sottimano family, established in Neive, one of the three communes forming the prestigious Barbaresco appellation.
Andrea, the son of founder Rino, is now in charge of the estate. Owner of plots on five vintages of the appellation, Sottimano produces five distinct barbaresco, vinified identically, with French barrel farms. Like Burgundy vintages, tasting here is always a great lesson of the different terroirs of this area. Fausoni always the most floral and elegant, accessible in youth. Currà and Cottà, where the family home and winery are located, are powerful, dense, well-built wines for the care. Pajoré is the in-between, combining power and elegance. Basarin seems an ideal combination of all the qualities of other vintages. A dolcetto, a barbera from Alba and a langhe nebbiolo are also produced, as the Piedmontese tradition dictates. For fun, Andrea completes the range with a friendly curiosity, a brachetto vinified in dry, 'Maté'.
Already very qualitative, production has reached new heights in the last five years. A journalist from a great Italian guide recently told us: "Andrea sets new standards, he will write his page in the history of Barbaresco." Prices remain very wise, despite the current rating.
